What's the best brush to use when you're broad-brushing

thin rails? The rails are maybe about an inch wide. I'm going to add some rustoleum and I hear the best finish is with a roller, but the roller I have is about three time wider than the rails. I don't want to use a spray can because it looks like tedious work. If someone suggests a brush, please be specific about the kind.

Thanks.
