Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat was the last excercise you did? I went for a long walk today. I even walked
past a pet store that has a cat I want but cannot have. I just walked on by and did not torture myself by going in and playing with her. Walked by a pizza place, a forest, a cemetery. Bought some meat at the M&M meat shop. Walked and walked. I feel great. Got a little sun. Perfect weather too: not too hot, not too cold. What are your tricks for enjoying exercise?

Compared to regular walking, Nordic walking (also called pole walking) involves applying force to the poles with each stride. Nordic walkers use more of their entire body (with greater intensity) and receive fitness building stimulation not present in normal walking for the chest, lats, triceps, biceps, shoulder, abdominals, spinal and other core muscles that may result in significant increases in heart rate at a given pace.[3] Nordic walking has been estimated as producing up to a 46% increase in energy consumption, compared to walking without poles.

(2,682 posts)walked out to the car and got in. When I was finished with my errand, I did the same -- got out of the car, entered the house.
Does that count?
No?
I didn't think so.
Oh, well.

(9,527 posts)It's kind of hard to exercise on one leg since the other is apparently mostly healing from a fracture (I didn't realize it was fractured for a month) and has some torn things in my knee. I'm going a bit crazy since I usually work out 8 times a week (doubling up on Saturday and Sunday). I've been doing some upper body and a bit of core work. Once I get the final word on my knee, I'll either be out of training for a couple of weeks, or longer if, as likely, I need surgery on the knee.
But I train capoeira, parkour and gymnastics and occasionally bike to work. So I enjoy it by doing things that are largely related, but aren't the same so I don't get too burned out by any one of them. Plus there's little cross-over between the participants, so when one group of people pisses me off, I can go train with one of the others.

Well,
that's after DAYS of mowing lawn, raking leaves,
moving 2 van loads to my new 28 acre property,
and walking from one end of it to the other thru the middle.

(20,234 posts)I did it last summer and went from being scared to run 90 seconds to being able to run (and enjoy it
!) for a half hour straight. I used audacity (free software) to put together run/walk mix tapes for my ipod with cues for when to run or walk, so I didn't have to be checking my watch. Having music I liked made a big difference in my motivation, and sticking to that program let me see some progress (and not injure my outtashape self).
It's about an 8 or 9 week program, I went back to week 4 this week since I hadn't run much during the winter. My exercise then was just racing through the hallways with some students after school where I teach.

(6,199 posts)It's the only exercise I really enjoy. I go to the gym as well, but I've come to the conclusion that there's just no way to make that enjoyable.
I have a treadmill to jog on for those days when I just can't face hauling my butt to the gym, and it can be made tolerable with a good movie or some South Park. Not enjoyable, but tolerable.

(20,043 posts)an hour kettle bell work out and ran a mile and a half on the tread mill. I do kettle bell at least five days a week. I take 1 or 2 days off. I don't run all the time cuz my knees hurt, so I do sweatin to the oldies a lot which is a lot of fun and a great cardio. So either I run or do that.
I always feel good when I'm done.

I need to get back into the swing of things, though.

(23,272 posts)for the 40 horses who reside here. I start at 6:30 am with my work day.
My "guys" (staff) arrive when I'm done feeding and we move out the first groups to the paddocks which takes @ 15 minutes of intense walking.
Breakfast is followed by (at this time of year) gardening, mowing, pruning trees, painting fence and jumps, etc...
Until lunch when we shift the am turnout horses and put out the pm horses. @ 45 minutes to move horses in and out, feed lunch grain and hay etc. By 1 pm, I'm done with outside work and most physical activity. Then I'm busy with business paperwork, housework, teenager management etc.
At 4 pm I put on my "Mom" hat and try to leave work behind....

(34,137 posts)First thing every morning. Last thing at dark, bring in all the bird feeders. It takes about twenty minutes each time, longer if I stop to watch the birds. This morning the swallow tail kite circled very low overhead as I was hanging the feeders on the south side of the house. I also had to dodge the hummingbird male who was defending his nectar feeder on the west side.
Most days I also do some yard work. Yesterday I pulled weeds and spent an hour weed whacking stuff on the slopes too steep for the kid to mow.
I'm trying to develop a routine to keep me going out every morning. Mom does this - every morning she walks around her yard, checking her plants and picking up fallen Spanish moss and small branches. That may be why she's 92 with few health problems.

(32,086 posts)I was going to go to the morning Zumba class today, but the hockey game was on late, and I didn't fall asleep until almost 2 AM. No energy for early exercise, so I'll go for a swim after lunch. I have been doing about a mile, lately. Don't know if I'll be able to get beyond 3/4 mi today. It depends on whether or not I have the energy, and if there's anyone waiting for a lane.
My trick for enjoying exercise is to take classes. They are always somewhat different, and I don't get bored like I do if I'm no some sort of apparatus. The music the instructors use is usually pretty motivational, too. Also, cross-training. Doing the same thing day in and day out gets excruciatingly boring. Got to keep it interesting.
