Mass marriage martyrs?

I subscribe to the NY Times Lens blog and often times, with photos there isn't much story but I think this photo says it all on its own.

Brides sat together as they took part in a mass marriage ceremony during the Akshaya Tritiya festival in Bhopal, India, Monday. The festival marks what is believed to be the most sacred day for marriage in Hindu mythology.

I'm not seeing a happy face in that crowd.
