Don't ask me how but our window in our dinning room fell and smashed today. These are old windows in the apartment me our renting and in order to have fresh air coming in we have to Open the window and place this screen in the window. these are old fashion windows and this screen basically adjust to fit the space. Anyways we opened the window to get some cool air. We don't leave it open at night because the window basically opened over our porch and well I don't want someone coming in so we close at night.
Anyways Wife and I get up at 8am we go make breakfast open the dinning room window and put the screen in. Wife gets ready and goes to work. I'm in other parts of the apartment (okay bathroom) and all of a sudden I hear a crashing sound. I come out and the WHOLE lower window is on the floor of the dinning room. Glass ( some HUGE pieces) are everywhere.
I call the landlord explaining the window is broke that someone can come up on our back porch and crawl right into the dinning room via the window.
He says: "The glass shop is closed today I'll pick it up tomorrow."
Mind you I explained that someone ANYONE can easily come in. We also would be charged for putting hole in the window frame area so putting up like plywood or something is out. My wife and I put up card board moving boxes and duct tape them to the window area but my wife is going to be here alone.
My wife is sleeping in the living room with the window in question in sight. I have to go to work (co-worker took vacation time so I'm starting a 7 day work week.)
Keep my wife in good thoughts please.

I thought your wife had been injured by the glass from the way you talked about it. Is your neighbourhood particularly dangerous?
I guess the reason I thought she may have been injured is because of a story my grandfather likes to tell where he cut himself horribly while installing a plate glass window many years ago.

(12,272 posts)Have you had break-ins in the neighborhood? Put something noisy on the porch below the window, so if someone steps up she will hear them.
Good thoughts for your wife to be safe.

(12,272 posts)Good to put the light out, I think. Do you have anything tall, like a bookcase that you could put on the porch to block the window from view?

(862 posts)glass companies WILL come out on weekends, even if only to board up a window. It costs more than business hours. I would think holes for attaching plywood could be fixed easily with putty.
