A question for world travelers:

I have a window of a couple of years where I have about $1800 a month to live on.

Do you think I can get around the globe with that kind of $??

I can live on the cheap.

I mean, not hanging in Macao or Dubai.....

He blogged about it. It sounded like an astounding experience. And he was far from well off. Making connections is the key.

Hope you do it and blog it!

All the people were supposed to do for payment was send them two postcards.

This was before the Internet.

that will not be easy until you have places to sleep cheap. Don't use the train - flying is cheaper. Cheapest hotels/motels start at around $25 a day - shared bedroom with bathroom at the end of the corridor, and you haven't eaten yet. Breakfast might be included, but if you want to experience a restaurant and even order the daily menu, it's about $15-20 without beverages. And that's for one meal. In Venice, a coffee now costs about $10, and if there's music playing, you pay an additional $12 extra. If you sit down at a table. If you order one to drink standing, it's around $1 (prezzo al banco.)

Research is crucial.

Perhaps it's doable, but it's nothing comforting and here you'll always count your money. $3000 would be just fine.

If you know people where you could sleep on the couch, then you'll save money.

It really depends on a lot of things, and I'm not a World traveler. But if you want to spend a day in, say, Paris and the next in Berlin and then off to Prague, the travel fairs alone will eat through your money fast.

You have to plan this very, very well. And I hope you can make it; living on the cheap but with experiencing the globe as we know it, and see all the cool stuff.

On edit: Changed 'rain' to 'train.' Yes, it's raining like crazy here, but I can't ride on it ...

I heard about it on the radio. I am not endorsing it - I have never used it, but they were interviewing people on the radio who had. Worth a look, if nothing else...

much of Central and South America. For Europe, here are some ideas: http://traveltips.usatoday.com/backpack-through-europe-50-day-103319.html
You can find ideas for inexpensive travel in the Lonely Planet guides.

Also, since you have such a big time frame, you should be able to save by avoiding high-season rates.

Minimize your time in the most expensive cities (such as London and Paris) and maximize your time in less expensive places (such as eastern Europe). Some of the countries with the worst economies might be cheaper (Spain and Greece for example). Avoid Japan because of the expense of the country and the expense of flying there. Try to schedule your travel so that you can sleep on trains.
