NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)that some people will stop watching, but all the publicity will draw in more viewers and they'll easily break their record, and possibly top True Blood's record (they've come close a few times)
finale is listed at 63 minutes, so adjust your dvr if needed

(1,353 posts)but I think it did a good job of setting things up for next season. After something huge like the RW, we needed to see the characters react and rearrange their alliances. It was a smart move have a positive note in the final scene, offering the idea that there is some hope for this civilization that we are watching spin into chaos.

Didn't seem like a finale.

(35,443 posts)Major spoiler ahead:
I was hoping for Lady Stoneheart, but no. Also, Jaimie's return is way off.
they'll leave Lady Stoneheart to next year's finale - it was the Storm of Swords epilogue, after all.
JoDog
(1,353 posts)last night too. They are showing Theon's story in real time on the show, as opposed to the books where we only hear about it in flashbacks. It made sense that they would also show LSH's story in real time as well. Her arrival comes shortly after the RW massacre.

(46,740 posts)I keep getting invested in people and run to wiki to find out what happens to them. I realize that the books are not complete, but, the summaries on wiki do not answer my questions completely. So, here are spoiler questions
1) Theon gets decapitated. That's the best his sister can do for him.
2) Lady Stoneheart hangs Brienne. Period. What word do you all think saved her? Is it a word that might return her to life?

JoDog
(1,353 posts)Last Warning, folks!
As of the closing chapters of "Dance with Dragons" (the 5th and so far most recent book), Brianne was still alive. After her (near?) hanging, she meets up with Jamie and persuades him to go with her for reasons the reader knows are false. To where she is taking him and why is left as a cliffhanger.
At the end of "Dance with Dragons" Theon also is alive and reunited with Yara/Asha. One of the 2 sample chapters already released from the forthcoming 6th novel "Winds of Winter" is from his point of view.

(56,828 posts)that after such a shocker/downer last week that the showrunners were afraid to leave the audience hanging with yet another downer in episode 10 all the way until late March or early April of next year.

(35,443 posts)Here's my hope for the Viper. I think that he would be great:
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)no idea
Yavin4
(35,443 posts)He was a major fan favorite on LOST. He played Sayid.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)but, that must be the guy from Lost they're talking about as a potential for that role. Naveen Andrews?
I think Andrews was a good choice because he's listed at only 5'9" and if they have a guy playing Gregor Clegane that is 7'0" or so, it will still be a pretty good contrast in size. (Though, I think they should get 7'7" Daniel Gilchrist for the Mountain - Gilchrist played Andre the Giant in the biopic a few years back...)

(10,952 posts)but, unless they expand the part - like they did with the Queen of Thorns/Olenna Tyrell - Oberyn Martell amounts to a glorified cameo, so he could probably do both.
I remember four scenes:
1) He's introduced outside of King's Landing as leader of the Dornish heading to Joffrey's wedding. Loved his initial talk with Tyrion how he was a big disappointment to Oberyn as a child - they had heard tales of Lady Lannister giving birth to a monster with a tail, forked tongue, claws, etc. When they saw him, he was only a small child with a big head, no tail, no cloven hooves, etc.
2) He's in the background at the wedding/reception, but then visits Tyrion before the trial
3) Sits in judgment at the trial
4) and, the epic showdown that I hope they can do word-for-word. Still might be my favorite scene of the entire series. (and for a instant Prince Oberyn had wings...)
Chan790
(20,176 posts)otherwise that scene is going to come out of left field. It's a pivotal scene and one that will require a good deal of time to explore the motivations and setup of which are going to have to be laid down in small pieces over the entire season or it will feel clunky (in terms of exposition). Also, he's one of those characters who I expect is going to be popular with TV audiences and they'd want to expand the part anyways.
I'd be surprised if he's not a fairly-major character in 2 or 3 episodes next season with appearances in 1 or 2 more.

Hayabusa
(2,135 posts)we didn't get the "birth" of Stoneheart as well, but I can certainly hope that she hasn't been dropped. And let's hope the role stays with who it should. I've heard some fan speculation that it could be another. Hopefully that's all it is.
I'm interested to see how Jaime's early return plays out. Then again he was released earlier so he didn't disappear for an entire season. Kinda makes sense he's back almost a season early.
Yavin4
(35,443 posts)They should have introduce her in this episode, and then picked it up later next year.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)but, I expect that they'll bring back Michelle Fairley as an occasional guest star - maybe one episode each of the next few seasons? She's not exactly in a lot of scenes, as the books were written. The scene with Petyr Pimple and Merrett Frey, and then the meeting with Brienne - so far. They managed to keep Jason Momoa's surprise appearance in the season finale in season 2, episode 10 under wraps. I suspect they can do it with Fairley as well.
Yavin4
(35,443 posts)She does have a new gig on the USA network show, "Suits".
but, Jason Momoa was filming Conan, and still managed to make it to film Season 2's finale.

But that's the mark of a great writer.
JoDog
(1,353 posts)Indeed, if Robb had taken his mother's advice at first (to paraphrase: "Forget Talisa, marry the Frey girl as you agreed to. Walder Frey is not a man to cross." , the RW would never have happened.
Later, if he had taken her advice and not executed Lord Karstark but only held him hostage, the Northern army would not have fractured, and he would not have needed to make nice to Walder Frey.
Robb waited too late to start listening to the people most experienced in the politics of the Riverlands, and he paid dearly for that mistake.

JoDog
(1,353 posts)but I do want to have a moment of appreciation for Yara Greyjoy as played by Gemma Whelan. I hope we will see more of this character in the series (as we do in the books from this point out). Her scene was excellent. The calm, resolved way she tells Balon Greyjoy to go f--- himself gives her entry to the GoT's League of Badass Women.
"I'm going to march on the Dreadfort, I'm going to find my little brother and I'm going to bring him home."
―Yara Greyjoy
Whelan's performance said: "Theon is a despicable ass, but he is OUR despicable ass. And is one because this family turned its back on him before. I will not do that again. I will go get him, even if you will not." Beautifully summed up the essence of the character.
Ilsa

I despise what Theon did at Winterfell, but his torture has brought my pity. He's a stupid man, but I hope he survives this.

(41,987 posts)Next season is going to be fun. That man better get writing, though! I'd be willing to bet HBO isn't that interested in the long drawn out subplots in book four.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)in 7 seasons on HBO, they're going to have to cut books 4 & 5 down to a season or a season & a half.
and, are people suddenly going to care about the Dornish and the Ironborn when it takes screen time away from Dany, Tyrion and Jon? Not to mention Cersei & Jamie.
Mike Daniels
(5,842 posts)Since the books run in tandem with each other it won't be that hard to combine the two. Quite simply, there's a lot of repetition of action and standing in place that can be cut down into one season.
Brienne's hunt for Sansa and eventual encounter with LS can be simplified and covered over three / four episodes. Tyrion's arc (which could have been reduced to 5 or 6 chapters in Dances with Dragons ) could easily be compressed into half of the season without losing anything relevant. Part of Arya's book four story may start up next year as she has about only two other set pieces remaining from what's left in Storm of Swords.
Solly Mack
(90,773 posts)I've read that he has already informed HBO how it all ends, more or less. I bet HBO figures out a way to get to Martin's desired ending even if the books aren't finished by that time.
I watch the show for clues as to where the books might go since he has told them the ending. While the show takes a lot of liberties with the books, if the program heads toward Martin's ending, they'll give away clues to how the book (ASoFaI) plays out by how they tell the story in the show.
Or not. lol
