The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsA strange experience at the movies...the movie was so loud as to be disturbing..
The loudness of the sound, ruined the experience. Afterwards, talking to the manager, he said they couldn't lower the sound.
It was an Imax/ 3D version of Star Trek 2.. The sound was so loud that it was quite disturbing, and I might add very surprising. I had seen many 3D and Imax shows before, and too loud sound, was never a problem. And, it got louder as the movie progressed. I remember the first Imax show in the 70s, To Fly...a wonderful experience. Many others also, Avitar a couple of years ago.
But this was the worst loudness I have ever experienced, almost painful..So that is it.. anyone else go thru something like this??

(10,237 posts)I attribute the volume to the shitty sounding JBL horns bleating away at 3K and the compression they use now.
For the money they charge at these corporate cinder block "theaters" people want a thrill ride not a movie .

(149,679 posts)Loudness is just one of the problems we encountered.
People talking, kicking the seats, kids running around, the high price of tickets and snacks...the list goes on.
At home, we control the volume, the pace of the movie, how clean the floors are, when we get snacks, the ability to pause or rerun the movie, etc...
It's just nicer at home. And we don't care about 3D.

(64,933 posts)I'd much rather watch a movie in the comfort of my home, when I watch the movie, and with the adult beverage that I choose!

(60,010 posts)Had never been in a multi-plex type theatre before.
I could here the sound of 2 other movies, and audience members talked and yelled right thru the film.
I left 1/2 way thru.
Note: This was NOT the same as going to see Rocky Horror for the 20th time, merrily stoned, in the 70's.
Ditto Star Wars.

(38,323 posts)Places like Disneyland or live concerts would be intolerable without them.
I watch movies at home with the sound low and captions on.
If I'm watching a movie all by myself I'll set the sound very low or muted depending on how important I think the sound is to the plot and the accuracy of the subtitles.
My favorite form of communication is reading and writing in a quiet place.
Quiet talk and music is fine, but when the noise exceeds a certain threshold I simply want to escape. When it's really bad I shut the audio inputs of my mind to "off" and hear nothing intelligible. It all becomes crashing surf.
