Just this morning I got my power back after 2 days without it

I am in Cherokee County, GA, where 2 F-1 tornadoes touched down Thursday night. Fortunately, my neighborhood did not get a direct hit, but we got the outskirts of one of them. But even so, the winds and the hail were terrifying. I live in a mobile home, so you can imagine how scary that was. The winds knocked down a tree across the street, which took out the power lines. Because there were thousands without power, teams from Alabama and South Georgia came to help out. This morning the power company finally showed up. I had no TV, no Internet, no AC and no hot water to take a shower. And even if I did have hot water, with no power the bathroom was pitch dark. And candles just do not cut it for enough light.

Anyway, everything is back to normal for now until the next storm.

did you get any roof damage? glad you are back on, that must have been pretty awful - do you have neighborly neighbors? it helps to have others around even if nobody can really do anything about the problem.

When I can get my son here to check out the roof, I will know for sure. In other thunderstorms, I have had branches come through the roof, once in the bedroom and another time in the living room. Luckily, I have home insurance which paid for the repairs.

the dog was crying and pacing but he won't go into the hall where the guest bathroom is so my husband got him under a doorway. I always wish for a basement at times like this! My neighbor said she is going to get a keypad for hers so we can all run over but I didn't want to be IN whatever it was that came through here.

I bet Ga Power just had a surge. Everybody's A/C just came back on running full blast.

Glad you are okay!

I and my home survived this storm, and it was very scary. The tornado sirens went off just as the storm hit. Lot of help they were as there was no time at all to run for shelter..

If you have enough candles (careful not to set something on fire) and a flashlight for moving around, the light is decent. Not for reading, of course. Go to bed early and read in the daylight if there is any.

I got the big fat candles and since I only use them in power failures, they will last a lifetime, I think I tend to light about three wherever I am holed up and use the big maglight (4 battery size) to get around. If you balance the maglight on its bottom, it casts enough light for the bathroom.

I see that there are LED versions of fat candles that won't burn the home down, don't know how long they last, though. About $10 for 3.

This non LED one is $6 at Target:

For $30 or so and eight batteries, you can use a Rayovac lantern. Something like this:

You can read by those.

I have a battery powered radio in my emergency kit.

Not to minimize the scariness, just saying with one scary hurricane a year, I have things fine tuned.
