The wiffle bat has almost no mass meaning you can wait relatively late and still get around on it--perhaps more importantly, you can get a good swing with little more than your wrist whereas a "real" bat pretty much requires legs, hips, and torso.

My brother and I played whiffle all the time, he was an excellent HS pitcher (played a year for Oregon State too) and he could do everything that guy is doing. I was only a fair baseball player, but I could compete with him at hitting the whiffle ball. I could throw the curve and a riser pretty much like that guy, (never got the screwball to break that well though). My "money" whiffle pitch was a knuckleball...less control and velocity, but much harder to hit than the sweeping curve.
