Man wild birds eat a lot...

we put 2 feeders out a few weeks ago and they absolutely eat whatever I put in the feeder every day, whether I fill it up all the way or halfway. And there's always one joker that sits on the feeder and uses his foot to scrape food onto the ground for everyone else to eat.

We get mostly doves, mourning and white-wing, and some smaller birds I can't identify, in addition to a few grackles. We also have a bird bath out but strangely the only birds that use it are the grackles.

I love birds.

Edited to add that we're in Katy, which is the far west side of Houston. Hot and flat.

Try putting a birdbath out for 'em. You'll increase the variety. In_The_Wind Jul 2013 #1

2. We have one out there

but only the grackles use it. I wonder if the water gets too hot (it was something like 107 here last Saturday), so I try to go out in the middle of the day when I'm home and put cold water in it.

You're right, they are entertaining. I can stand at the window and watch them for quite a while. I have to admit tho that when I go out to refill the feeder or put water in the bath I enjoy the sound of all those wings flapping and the admonishing whistles they give me

At feeding times (dawn and dusk) we usually have 20 or 30 birds out there, mostly doves. During the day at any given time there will be a half dozen to a dozen poking around on the ground. I like the fact that they're getting used to our yard and even when not feeding they hang around in our trees.

It's amazing how quickly the birds learn trust.

Do you have a shady spot you can move the birdbath into ?

I was thinking of moving it to the front. The back is mostly south facing so it gets a lot of sun, and the front only gets afternoon sun (still hot). The selfish part of me doesn't want birds frolicking in the bath without me being able to watch

This was a few months ago. It was warm enough to take the heater out of the birdbath. We have a huge variety of birds here now. It's their first summer being fed by us.

I often joke it's, "SRO". Chickadees, Cardinals, Red Wing Blackbirds, Mourning Doves, and a few others that I'm not sure about. We have two baths up and one feeder. They're right outside my kitchen window and I love watching and listening, and we will have our second Chickadee hatch in the next few days. We have a three season room and so our cats get to sit and be entertained without any risk to the birds. I get a kick out of watching the kitties watching the birds.

I haven't seen a single honey bee or butterfly though this year-- that has me worried. We have 100's of flowering plants and many are butterfly friendly... maybe it's the weird weather we've had here in NE IL.

I have feeders outside my window and have caught 'em going back for seconds many times.

We feed 'em all year long, even though technically we're supposed to stop in the spring so as not to attract the bears.

We get

grackles, crows (out back by the pond - we give them bread and stuff), mourning doves, sparrows, purple finches, gold finches, blue jays, rose-breasted grosbeaks (beautiful colors, lovely songs), chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and occasionally some evening grosbeaks.

Each year we have catbirds that build a nest under the eaves of a small porch and raise at least two batches of kids. We had one batch already which left the nest a few weeks ago, and now there are four more eggs in the same nest. There is a small "bird cam" by the nest connected to a camera inside so we can watch them.

Oh, and hummingbirds
