The Greatest Closer Of All Time Now Owns A Throne Made From His Victims

Mariano Rivera is a boss.

The Yankees’ Mariano Rivera is retiring at the end of this season after a long career as a well-liked and respected closer, and all year teams throughout MLB have been presenting him with gifts.

So what the hell do you give a 12-time All Star and five-time World Series champion? What is left in the world for a man who already has everything? The Minnesota Twins had a pretty good answer for that question: they gave Rivera a rocking chair made of bats broken by Mo’s trademark cut fastball

“Oh man, thanks so much! Who told you guys I was in the market for a rocking chair?!?”

I happened to be at Mariners game in '96 or '97 against the Yankees and a huge fight broke out. It was the kind of bench clearing brawl where everyone's arteries seem to be popping out of their neck and nobody could stop it. Darryl Strawberry and Paul O'Neil were there.

Everybody was out there posturing and screaming but not Rivera. He was sitting on a bench at the old sideline bullpen with his hands in pocket and his chin buried in his chest looking like he was asleep. I remembered that more than the fight.

But that's a great gift. And he seems to appreciate it.

I never knew anything about him outside of his baseball accomplishments, being in an NL city and not following baseball very closely. He seems like a wonderful person.

I was there. saw Rivera close, fortunately for us Diamondback fans, unsuccessfully that night.

Also pitching that night, Roger Clemons, Curt Schilling AND Randy Johnson.

Just wow.

I haven't been to a major league game in probably close to 30 years. I miss going. We have some minor league around here and I've been to a few of those but it's still not quite the same thing as seeing your team in their home park.

As much as I hate the Yankees, Mariano Rivera is impossible not to respect as a closer. No one has been more dominating.

The Twins are my favorite team and I love their sense of humor about this.
