Min wage here in BC is currently $10.25 per hour. That may sound like a lot but the cost of living here in Vancouver is sky high.

a single person working full time at minimum wage does not qualify for most types of public assistance. my take home pay works out to be just above minimum wage and there is no way i could live on that by myself.

(6,154 posts)Just curious as the only thing that comes to mind for me is welfare which you obviously don't mean. Yeah despite the higher wage here it's not easy to get by on even 10+ here but I don't envy 7.78. It sounds like you are paid salary, when you say it "works out to", that often sucks from my experience as they can really overwork your and play with the numbers and still "claim" to pay you min wage when sometimes it's even below.

(24,146 posts)you can go to the food bank, but you can't get food stamps. you can qualify for rent assistance, but the waiting list is like three years long.
as far as my take home pay is concerned, that's after taxes and health/dental/life (can't complain about having those). i claim the minimum deduction and could probably bump that up one to get more take home pay. they'd have to pay me double what they're paying me know to take salary.

(6,154 posts)We don't have food stamps here in Canada. Well actually after Googling it appears we DO have something similar but it's very very little used. If your income is low enough you can apply for "social assistance" (administered by the province) which provides you with a monthly cheque from the government to help with all living costs, it's not limited to food and is basically just X amount of cash based on your income and needs. Though our min wage is high enough that this isn't used as much as in the US.

(6,154 posts)Didn't know there was a federal cap on the minimum wage but that's a good thing. Sad that it's that low, though living costs there are cheaper probably.

(6,154 posts)That goes farther than here in Vancouver. Rent is insane here. So is a lot of other stuff. Though I think Toronto isn't far off now is it?
PS I know you aren't in Toronto.

just over 200 sq feet.
Hate think what that would be now.
Even in Northern Ontario - just to get a ROOM in someone else's house is close to that.
Of course, there are scummy places where those that can't afford decent housing cram themselves into.
But I believe the worst Province for housing cost is Alberta - the oil boom drove prices sky high.
The BEST Province for affordable housing?
Manitoba - you can BUY a home dirt cheap there.
But if ya want to live in a city - ya gotta pay -
Me - is in the bush - 28 acres of heaven surrounded by thousands of acres of undeveloped land.
and only 15 minutes from town.
gotta luv it.

(10,237 posts)unemployment is around 11 % which keeps the minimum wage down . Now the quality of life in the L.A. basin is at an all time low because the workers are the spenders on cultural things but they have no money .
Locut0s
(6,154 posts)Especially when you consider that L.A. and San Francisco are some of the more expensive places to live in the US. I just checked out the living costs in SF and they are on par with here and it's hard to get by with $10.25 here! I don't envy that

(22,845 posts)you're under 20 - $4.25 "training wage" for the first 90 days
you work part time and are in high school or college - $6.16 OR
you're in a job in which tips are part of your income - $3.63
My daughter is a waitress and says tips are way down from what they were several years ago because fewer people can afford to eat out, and because people are generally stingier with tips.

And despite all the dire threats, it is still possible to get a fast-food burger or a pizza without driving to Campbell or Santa Clara.

(56,829 posts)cowardly Democrats control the governorship and both houses, but got scared when they were going to raise it to $9.25.
as expensive as much of CT is, the minimum wage should be increased immediately to $9.25, and then to $10.00/hr in 2014 or 2015, and then even higher than that.
