When I went to UCLA film school many, many years ago, my Project 1 (first student film) was about a little girl's doll that comes to life, grabs a knife, and saves the girl from a child molester. I used two identical dolls, but one was the avenging doll with completely black eyes and teeth. I used stop motion animation to make the doll appear to move, which took a long time and precision, shooting one frame at a time. I have a real appreciation for Harryhausen's artistry.
I loved Jason And The Argonauts. Besides the incredible work of Harryhausen on animating the skeleton army, his work with the harpies and the giant bronze statue come-to-life Talos was great, along with several other effects like the God Neptune who rises from the sea. What a great movie. And the music is superb. I love the main musical theme, so bold and heroic.
And the other Harryhausen films tonight like Earth Versus The Flying Saucers and the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms are very entertaining, thanks in large part to Harryhausen's skills. I can't believe I actually saw the latter two movies in the theater in the 1950s when they first came out and I was a little kid. I'm getting real old.
