"benvarine" was also street slang in the 70s for a remedial concoction athletes used for hemorrhoids, which was combination of Ben-Gay and Vaseline. When used effectively, it forced the user to make a face just like what you see in that picture, a cross between anguish and euphoria.

I thought the joke's appreciation was simply limited to those old enough to know of Ben Vereen yet young enough to know of X-Men (Wolverine).
