I asked my ex when I could stop by to pick up my t-shirt and an important book.

The important book is a collection of James Baldwin.

She responded by simply listing all of the things I have that belongs to her.

I feel this is a fair indicator that she is not happy with my inquisition?

Sorry. (You may get the book back, though, if she doesn't have a fireplace or a barbecue.)

Maybe tell her you'll bring all her things, then ask again for a time?

Sucky experience, hope things get better for you soon...

I responded with that. She hasn't gotten back yet.

Really, I don't care about the shirt. I do however care quite a lot about the book. It was a personal gift from one of my professors and has a very meaningful note written inside.

... unless, of course, one of the items is a dog. Then all bets are off.

Good luck with the book.

you might want to consider getting a mediator involved here...professional, or a mutual friend...to work out the return of each other's property so neither of you has to meet.

Too bad it has to be this way, though.

Whenever I've broken up with someone, we've always had fair and civilized division of property. No drama. So I can't even imagine what it must be like for people to hold each other's stuff hostage.
