http://bookriot.com/2013/08/01/the-sounds-of-reading/The most common thing people said happens in their heads when reading is that they hear a voice. Its there own voice, reading the book, and its the equivalent of the method and speed of you reading out loud
but internally. An internal rather than external voice.
There were other responses, too. Some people told me that they wind up mentally assigning a host of voices to all of the lines of dialog and bits of narration, until the inside of their heads are nearly full-cast audiobooks all by themselves. A few other people told me that they didnt read the story internally, per se, but they did wind up mentally converting it almost into a movie of sorts.

(34,135 posts)1. I'm a "visual" reader - converting the words to images in my mind
While I can enjoy books that have dialects, reading them slows me down immensely and prevents me from creating the visualization of the landscape of the book in my imagination. That's why, although I enjoyed reading Mark Twain, I haven't re-read any of his books, for instance.
ETA - it's also why I don't enjoy poetry.

A book is like an IMAX in my head.

It's one of the reasons I love Steinbeck so much. Every time I re-read one of his books it's just like being there.

When I am reading and see errors like that, I hear an internal voice screaming in my head.
