I hit a bat on the freeway on my way to work this morning...

I was coming up on an exit lane where there were a lot of tall eucalyptus lining the road; It was flopping little cartwheels in the lane in front of me; we think it had been flying too low chasing bugs and been clipped by one of the many big trucks driving past, and I couldn't avoid it.
My husband says it was probably a mercy to the poor critter; he's a country boy, and told me the way it was acting before it hit the bumper, it was probably hurt too badly to survive much longer even if it had made it to the side of the road.

Poor bat. I hope it was a mercy for it, too. That's the only thing that kept me from bursting into tears while I was driving, and it's affected my entire workday so far.

A bird flew into my windshield while I was driving on the expressway. I really felt badly the rest of the day, but there was nothing I could do avoid it.
