and my first would most likely be some version of my clan crest - a simple line drawing would be fine but maybe if I trusted the artist enough I would let him freestyle on it some if he was of a mind to. I wouldn't mind working in my clan tartan but I hear tattoo artists don't much like doing plaid...

Either the left side of my chest or on my upper arm.

If I ever go to Japan to visit, one of the first places I want to visit are the Onsen /Rotenburo (public bathhouses) and they do not allow people who wear tattoos there. Its scares the customers, thinking there maybe Yakuza (Japanese mafia) bathing there. All those with Tattoos are not allowed to bathe at an Onsen or Rotenburo.

And believe me, more than anything..I want to go!!

I bought one of those epilators once. A few seconds with that cured me of any desire, ever, for a date with a tattoo needle.

I could see myself maybe doing a henna design, no pain, no real permanence although you have the option to touch it up if you want to keep it.

Or - I could just go with what I have now: thumb and forefinger on my left hand stained dark brown from smashing walnuts. That seems to be working for me. If nothing else, it keeps men from hitting on me - it looks like I've been playing in dog poop.

my husband, otoh, has so many that i can never remember all of them. i think he has 14, but i can't say for sure. one of them is a pyramid of six different flags, so maybe you can say he has eight.

Not sure anyone would say the same about me...

But if I were to get one, I thought about getting a replica UPC symbol on my arm, or something; as a sort of existential protest. The code numbers would be my birth numbers, time, day, and date.

find and go to the right person for that.

There are artists that do those so well that they can be read by UPC scanners (it entails using magnetic ink for one thing, not because it's magnetic but because it's extremely-permanent and doesn't diffuse or bleed-out. Otherwise the tattoo doesn't remain sharp enough to read.) and who do the research to find the right UPC code to make it read-out what you want it to. I figure anything worth doing is worth doing in the coolest ways possible.

But I like the idea of something I heard in a Groucho Marx concert recording -- he talked about a starlet he had known back in the day, a lovely young woman who usually wore an anklet. The words on the anklet sound like a clever idea for an ankle tattoo -- "heaven's above"!

Tattoos are on the opposite end of my aesthetic, which tends to the minimalist. And I also have that "disfigurement" thing going on. One man's disfigurement is, of course, another's adornment. But I would be a liar if I said the cringe wasn't there.

Ridiculous. I like myself. I am not the same person I was ten years ago, and God willing, I will continue to grow and change and be different ten years from now. My taste and style evolves; trying to save a moment in time on my body (which also changes) seems foolish.

I even find the "in memory of" ludicrous. If someone or some event is important to you, you should be able to remember them without a piece of string on your finger or a tattoo. If you can't remember them, then you have bigger problems that a tattoo won't solve.

Plus the colors fade and the bodies make things just look like a waste of money.

But what other people do to themselves is their business (unless one of my kids comes home wearing one, in which case if they have money to waste on such nonsense, they had best be paying their own bills).
