So I got on a plane at 4pm Eastern time on Tuesday at Dulles, and it's now, allegedly, 8:15 am on Thursday, and I'm in Mumbai.
There are a lot of mustaches in Mumbai. And a lot of half-finished skyscrapers. You know how Venice is supposed to be the one city that looks exactly like you imagine it? Well Mumbai has that too. The shantytowns, the half-finished half-rotting highrises, the lagoons and groves, the fabulous wealth literally right next to the unbelievable poverty.
I don't recognize the birds here; I'm looking forward to getting to know them.
Our building is in wings, so we have the south wing of our floor, which means we have balconies on the east and west side of our living room and bedroom. The Arabian Sea is really close to the west, and you can barely see the bay off to the east. The balconies have nettings. I asked our super "are you afraid we're going to jump?" He shook his head and said "monkeys".

Indian submarine hit by explosion at Mumbai port.
At least 18 sailors are feared to be trapped on board an Indian submarine that caught fire after an explosion in a Mumbai dockyard, officials say.
The blast occurred shortly after midnight and it took fire-fighters several hours to douse the blaze.
Officials say the diesel-powered vessel was badly damaged and remains partly submerged at its berth.
Many sailors managed to jump to safety. Rescue teams are on scene and some of the injured were taken to hospital.
It is unclear exactly what caused the explosion
