trof's useless trivia: 'Green with envy' 'The green eyed monster'

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with the need to...um...urinate.
OK, two or three times.

Evidently I have a prostate gland that's about the size of Rhode island.
TMI?

Anyway, strange thoughts come into my head while I'm trying to get back to sleep.
Last night: Green with envy?
Where the hell does THAT come from?

Well, from some unknown reason the color 'green' is associated with envy.
After an internet search I can't find out why.

It's also associated with jealousy.
'The green eyed monster'

DO NOT confuse envy with jealousy.

Jealously is fear of losing something you have.
Usually the affection and loyalty of another.

Envy is wanting something another has.

BTW, Schadenfreude is pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.

based on humours or something, according to my searches.
I wanted to blame old Will but Mr. Web says usage predates the bard.
