Look at this gorgeous animal that got euthanized because of a system failure.

Breaks my heart

A dog named Hershey was accidentally euthanized by Orange County Animal Services even though an application for adoption was pending on the 2-year-old pit bull.

The owners surrendered Hershey on Aug. 6, and after a week he received two rescue requests that fell through, so he was scheduled for euthanasia on Aug. 15, officials said Wednesday.

"That afternoon, a third adoption application was filed at Animal Services," an animal services statement said. "Unfortunately, our system of checks and balances failed and the dog was euthanized in error."

"We are terribly sorry for this mistake and our hearts go out to the adopting family," said Dil Luther, the manager of Animal Services. "An occurrence such as this is extremely rare. However, it happened and it's an error we do not take lightly. We have already reinforced our procedures to ensure this does not happen again."

My friends just went through the adoption process for a Amstaff, and it took 6 weeks of background checking and overnight-only test visits. She is the sweetest thing, thankfully she was at a no-kill rescue so there was no chance of something like this happening.

And quite frankly, there should be more safeguards and checks so this sort of thing doesn't happen.
