My hair goes very curly when it is short. Anybody else ever cut their own hair? I do when it is long. Not so much when it needs to be cut short. But I think I did a good job today.

A girlfriend I had was a hairdresser and I was spoiled. When we split I just went and bought a pair of scissors and did it myself.
My friends were probably kind in never criticizing my skilz!

Today though, my foot kinda annoys me, but I think I'll pass on the same solution.

(20,234 posts)My first self-cut was in the latrine in basic training - it took about a week for me to realize the long hair wasn't gonna work. I used tiny little sewing scissors, with the blades that are about 2 inches long, and I have a LOT of thick hair! Then my friend who actually knew how to cut hair fixed it as best she could.
I tried a few cuts at a real place when I went through a stage of thinking I should act like an adult - but I hated most of the professional haircuts I got.
Last one I did was that deal of putting my hair in a rubberband/ponytail towards the front of my forehead and doing a blunt cut across that for some layers.
Anyway, congrats - I think self cuts are the only way to go!

... with each other a little. Then it was off to the barber shop. Having the longest hair (shoulderblade-length),
I and this American Indian kept hanging back further and further in line until finally it was our turn. Inside the
building were three barbers, all three looking and sounding (and smelling) like hardcore alcoholics who couldn't
get a job cutting hair in any other type of situation.
.
I swear it was a joke they repeated sometimes scores of times a day... and it never failed to make them all
laugh hilariously -- "You want this short, medium or long?"
.
Well, duh!!! "Long, sir... please!!!"
.
"He wants it long, Earl!!!" (Insert hilarious laughter from the three.)
.
BUZZZZZZ!!!!! BUZZZZZZ!!!!! BUZZZZZZ!!! -- until all the external hairs on our haids (including any beard
or mustache hairs) were just fond memories.

It was obvious to us all that the haircuts were part of the breaking-down of the individual. When done. NO
ONE could recognize anyone else -- even the ones who had started to form friendships.

(6,011 posts)who cut her hair and her friends' by having them lean over and then she'd just comb or brush it to hang down straight (seems to work better fairly wet), cut it straight across so when they stood up it would fall into a layered cut. I just 'googled' this method and yours is mentioned, too- many people say it's the best cut they've ever had, and have continued to cut it this way.
