(4,851 posts)In the NFL I cheer on the Giants, but the NFL only exists to let you down easy and give you a day to recover from the fun of College Football on Saturday!
What the Duck! Bring on the Quack Attack! LETS GO DUCKS!!!
Spike89
(1,569 posts)Almost can't wait! I do root (tepidly) for the Packers on Sundays, but that is just because as a child I thought they were copying the Ducks uniforms. I do like to watch former Ducks in the NFL, but the only games that are "must see" are college football.
dr.strangelove
(4,851 posts)Good to meet you. Hoping for another Rose filled season!
Spike89
(1,569 posts)Couldn't help but notice that the first response in the thread was from a Duck. In some ways, I really consider myself extremely lucky to have been a fan since the 60s (I was a child). My Dad (UofO alum) took me to my first game when they opened Autzen (Colorado in 1967 when I was 9). We went to most of the games from then on.
I took my son (UofO '09) to games when he was little, sitting in the student section during the infamous 0-0 civil war "game" and countless humiliations at the hands of the Huskys. He's a rabid fan too, but really he only started paying attention to the games when the Ducks started their road up to respectability in the late 80s.
The last decade or so has been great, all the more because of the ridicule (and apathy) the Ducks and Duck fans once endured, not so long ago. I don't begrudge the traditional powers their history, because rising from the ashes has been so fun!

(4,851 posts)I am a New Yorker, having been born and raised in the city. But when it came time for school, I wanted to get as far from NY as I could and Oregon seemed to meet both the physical and metaphysical distances I was seeking. I met my lovely wife, another NYer (actually from Jersey) and we fell in love in Oregon.
My first year was 1991. I was there for the end of Brooks and start of Billotti. I saw the Rose and Cotton Bowls bookend the end of the "Brooks Era" and start of the "Billotti Era." I have been a very lucky Ducks fan. My 20+ years have mostly been very good, but the last decade has been something special.
Spike89
(1,569 posts)Pretty neat that you came all that way and met someone from pretty much the same place (oh, and went to college too). I haven't lived on the East coast (though I've visited a lot), but almost every teacher I had K-12 (Catholic schools) was from NY or Philadelphia. You could always tell the new arrivals, it took a year or so for them to adjust to the difference. The metaphysical gulf is much larger than the actual distance.

(46,179 posts)My standard response to Duck fans.
Of course, my standard response to Beaver fans is "Hell, no. Ducks!"
I'm a platypus. If I have time to watch, I'll cheer for either.
dr.strangelove
(4,851 posts)As a NYer who relocated to Oregon, I do not have the lifelong attachment to one side of the "civil war" game. I chose Oregon for its academic programs, but obviously also feel for their athletics and supprt them when I can. but I also find myself lovign the Pac-12 and wanting the Pac-12 to do well. I would love every year for the Duck and Beavers to play for the Rose Bowl or a National Title appearance. Of course I would always want the ducks to win, but when they are playing anyone else, I support the Beavers unless them losing would somehow help the Ducks.
LWolf
(46,179 posts)is a Duck alumni, and a rabid supporter. That's why I chime in for the Beavs sometimes; just to get his goat. Our students, being natives, of course take sides; usually, whatever side their parent takes. They are understanding, though, when I tell them I'm a platypus; we've got a few of those, too.

I do care about history and architecture. Soldier Field wins this war.
Bears did WAY better than the Cardinals. The Cardinals suck.
Urlacher was defense. Our defense still rocks. Cutler is the quarterback. We have some positive additions to the offensive line that should bring out the best in him.
We have a helluva better chance than the Cardinals. The Cardinals suck to the point of being a joke.

(6,795 posts)And where is the parking?
Wait Wut
(8,492 posts)I understand your concern about the parking. Because the Cardinals have no fans, there is always an overabundance of parking available. The Chicago Bears have soooooooooooo many fans, that a multitude of options need to be available. The only time the Cards need parking is when they play the Bears. My son enjoyed his birthday present last year. Tickets to the Bears v Cards game in the Cardinals 'stadium', packed with Bears fans and a sad, sad day for Cardinals fans and players, alike.
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2012122312/2012/REG16/bears@cardinals#menu=highlights&tab=recap
As far as the 'spaceship', yeah, I guess we coulda torn down the old stadium and built something as hilarious as the Cards, but again, we appreciate architecture and history in Chicago. That was the most agreeable solution to finding room for the thousands and thousands of Bears fans.

... the Philadelphia Eagles went up against the Oakland Raiders in the 1981 Super Bowl.
.
.
.
LITERALLY from the moment they ran on the field, the Eagles looked so intimidated (and
played so badly) that it was like a talented highschool team had been given the chance to
play against a pro team.
.
I don't know why, but it's soured me on football ever since. I did get an opportunity go to
my one-and-only pro game when a friend of mine with 2 season tickets learned (I met him
at the beer distributorship) at the very last minute that he couldn't go. Normally, he could
have sold them at a decent price, but it was too late, so he gave them to me. I couldn't
find anyone to go (I only had about 10 minutes before I had to take off).
.
Coolest thing, traffic on the Schuykill Expressway (pronounced SKOO-kul) was stop-and-go
and bumper-to- bumper. I pulled up alongside of a car filled with friends of mine headed in
for a Genesis concert (literally across the street from the football stadium). I had beer and
pot and they a cooler full of hoagies, so some great bartered items were passed from
car-to-car for about 5 miles or so.
.
It was kinda cool to see the game live (I could see everything at once instead of what the
director chose to show me -- albeit VERY small -- nosebleed seats).
.
But once was enough.

(54,256 posts)The Elephant Story
The story of how Alabama became associated with the "elephant" goes back to the 1930 season when Coach Wallace Wade had assembled a great football team.
On October 8, 1930, sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story of the Alabama-Mississippi game he had witnessed in Tuscaloosa four days earlier. Strupper wrote, "That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast, aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals, and the best blocking team for this early in the season that I have ever seen. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down, often for an additional two minutes.
"Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big and they went right to their knitting scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against one of the best fighting small lines that I have seen. For Ole Miss was truly battling the big boys for every inch of ground.
"At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity.
"It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."
Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants," the color referring to the crimson jerseys.
The 1930 team posted an overall 10-0 record. It shut out eight opponents and allowed only 13 points all season while scoring 217. The "Red Elephants" rolled over Washington State 24-0 in the Rose Bowl and were declared National Champions.

DH said that when he went there '64-68 (math/physics), they beat OU for the first time in a couple of decades and they had a bonfire in the streets. That was big excitement in Stillwater. That and eating at Hideaway Pizza.
I have an orange t-shirt that reads, "MY OTHER T-SHIRT IS BLACK"
The college I went to was so preppy they were Simon Pure except for tennis scholarships. So the big rivals were Rice University, Stanford and USC. Their big weapons were the Giammalva Brothers. Their football team plays powerhouses like Howard Payne University, Millsaps College, Case Western Reserve and the University of Guadalajara.
