need a gift card idea, please

I need to get a thank you gift card (around $50) for someone I do not know AT ALL, who went out of their way and above the call of duty on a service. Cash tip would be inappropriate.

Thinking mid-scale chain restaurant (ugh, I know) but due to the joke factor, not Olive Garden, please.

Don't know what part of town they live in, don't know tastes, or anything about them other than they are in a skilled, mostly manual labor, sort of a profession. What does the Lounge think?

I don't think you can go wrong with a card to a nice, mid-scale restaurant. One that serves all sorts of food, too, so that any kind of mainstream dining would be available.

I'm sure the person will be quite touched and pleased at your thoughtfulness!

Do you have a good local steakhouse that you recommend? They often carry extensive menus so there's a lot of things to choose from.

(I'm OK, thanks.)

I would suggest a steakhouse chain, like Longhorn, which is supposed to be the best of the chains. Texas Roadhouse is also supposed to be one of the better ones. They also have non-steak options, if this person isn't a steak eater. Claim Jumper is pretty good, too, and they have a really varied menu.

Italian is also a fairly safe bet. I really like Cucina Tagliani. Not a chain, but they have restaurants in Glendale and Peoria. http://www.cucinatagliani.com/ They have gift cards.

thanks for the suggestions so far. Personally I would rather have the plain visa card (or cash) but we were trying to get away from something that looked/felt like a cash "tip", and more of an actual thank you "gift." I know that is kind of a strange and perhaps arbitrary difference but there you have it!

That would give the recipient a wide range to choose from and not really look like a cash handout.
