OK, so there's this guy on H2, calls himself a moonshiner, but he has a licensed still. (Original Post) Brigid Aug 2013 OP

Perhaps. It's a bit of a vernacular problem. Chan790 Aug 2013 #2

Yeah, the name 'moonshine' implies that is was distilled clandestinely (at night) Aristus Aug 2013 #4

The corn-mash liquor produced from such stills is identical to that produced by the same stills 20 years ago when it was not-possible (not that any of the 'shiners I knew would have gotten one if it were possible) to get licensing for a small-batch commercial corn-mash liquor distillery and it really was moonshine.

It's sold in liquor stores as moonshine (one brand sold is "White Lightning" which was also a euphemism for moonshine), but...yes, if they wanted to be precise, it's un-aged corn-whiskey, applejack or peachjack depending on the source of the fermenting sugars...and the output of the unlicensed small-batch potato-vodka distillation two chemist friends of mine set up in an unused dorm-room in college was moonshine vodka.

If I'm gonna to make moonshine, I wanna go driving around in a souped-up 1940 Ford and be chased by revenooers and stuff.

I thought it was hard cider after freezing and removing the part that froze.

Generally, applejack refers to any distilled apple liquor.

to avoid trouble with the law.

If there's no trouble with the law, it's just hard liquor...
