DU vets, need some help identifying something

My boss, Jack, is a Korean War vet. He's been buying odds and ends of Korean-War-era military equipment recently (he just bought a helmet) and he wants to purchase this spotting scope:

That's him with the Tommy gun. He's looking for the military designation for the spotting scope on the right, with the red tape wrapped around it. He wants to see if he can buy one. He recalls it was 20x power.

If anybody knows what it was called back then, I'd appreciate you sharing it.

Thanks!

1. Tell your boss to get his finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard unless he's shooting.

My understanding that the M49 is later issue (1944), but either could have been in service in Korea.
