The thing was always too damn heavy and cumbersome.

Great for dodging uniform inspections during tech school, though.

The thing weighs about 15 pounds. For my mother who weighed maybe 100 lbs. when she signed up in 1940 it was simply too heavy for her to wear, but it was the only winter gear she was issued. Fortunately, she was re-assigned to Hawaii not too many months into her service.

She still has that original cape and it is is wonderful condition. I think we need to donate it to the Smithsonian or some other museum - I have not found a picture of one exactly like it anywhere on the internet.

At least that was true 10 years ago. There's some company that has the contract.

This looks almost exactly like the Army Black Overcoat that's current issue. It may be the exact same garment.

Now here's the sum total: The Army, which already uses this coat, enlists 80,000 new soldiers every year. Each of them gets a coat. There ain't but 235,000 jarheads in the whole Corps. Can you dig it? If they get into this larger Defense Logistics Agency contract they might be able to save enough on uniform acquisition to finance replacing some of that worn-out shit they've been stuck with all these years.
