I've watched ospreys fish in my 'back yard', but never saw anything like this.

(54,256 posts)I was never that much into analyzing the 'mechanics' of it.
'Yeah, I see, that's how it works, OK.'
I'm amazed at how the bird can shake off the water, like a dog, and still remain airborne.
I know he's losing a lot of lift with the extra weight and degraded flight dynamics of the wet wings.
The size of that last payload (trout?) is mind boggling.
The goshawk video is a good one too.
Thanks.

(153,160 posts)guys came in a boat to bring the houseboat back into the cove to park - they were telling us they saw what they thought was an injured eagle flapping in the water - on closer inspection what had happened was the eagle had bagged himself a fish apparently too big to take airborne so the eagle was winging it in the water with his prey to the nearest island - the guys said they got a big WTF ARE YOU LOOKING AT look from the eagle.......so they let him be

(4,909 posts)an eagle can only lift prey about equal to its weight. Birds are
amazing creatures.

(19,373 posts)Huntington Lake in the Sierra Nevadas a few years back. Got this shot of an osprey with a trout. Also got to witness a bald eagle trying to steal a fish that an osprey had caught. Happened right over my head out on the lake, but the pictures came out way overexposed. To excited to check my settings!

(34,109 posts)We usually get one or two a year that stop by and fish my big pond. It is my front yard so we get to watch but I have never seen anything like this. We get bald eagles too but they usually are carrying rabbits.
Great video. How on earth did they get that underwater shot? Wow!
