Has anyone ever done an open water swim event?

I'm thinking of maybe doing something along those lines.

I usually swim at least 1/4 a mile a day in my pool and a mile or mile and a half a week. No sweat.

I wouldn't be pulling a Diana Nyad anytime soon, but I'm thinking starting off at a 1 mile or 1.5 mile event wouldn't be too difficult.

But I'm sure there are variables between pool swimming and open water swimming, such as currents and hazards such as jellyfish.

Mind you, I'm not looking to win such an event, or even place in the top half.

Anyone have any experience in these regards?

By open water I assume you mean the ocean. applegrove Oct 2013 #1
The closest I've come was skinny dipping in a river and overturning a canoe in another. CIT13 Oct 2013 #2

I find ocean swimming much harder than lake swimming. I've swum a mile in a lake and it is quite pleasant. You get into the zone. That being said I have always been a heafty female to have an advantage over men in long distance swimming. Good luck!

In the latter case we lost the beer, which probably had something to do with the canoe tipping over.

As for jellyfish, it's my understanding that the clear ones don't sting. I pulled one the size of a softball out of my trunks. No damage to the unit or his two nutty friends.
