All require a newer HD TV for connection I think.

A new TV (Smart TV) with built in WiFi or Ethernet connection to your internet. These will connect directly to Netflix and other providers.

A Roku device that you can hook up to an HDMI outlet on the TV and a WiFi or ethernet internet connection

A BluRay player with WiFi or ethernet internet connection

A newer game console like a PS3 or XBox 360 and a WiFi or ethernet internet connection

Most importantly a broadband internet connection. HD movies and TV shows take a lot of bandwidth.

I use my 23 year old TV. The Roku HD (not listed anymore) I have is wireless so you'll need wifi. Ethernet connection is only available on the Roku3. I believe you need a credit card for Roku that they keep on file at least that is my memory.

There are also many free channels you can subscribe to. A lot of them are crap.

There is a DU site for Netflix in case you didn't know that.

I also use PLEX to connect my computer to my roku. Which gathers shows from some channels (CBS, NBC, The Daily Show, that you can watch for free instead of on the computer, but your computer needs to be on for it to work.

It also allows you to watch Youtube videos on your TV, which I do by finding a bunch of stuff and adding it to YouTube.s "watch later" or "favorites" tab.

PLEX also allows me to listen to my itunes music on the TV. ( I don't have speakers on my computer)

...shop around for any HDMI connections you may need. I needed a cable for a similar reason as yours (but mine was Amazon instead of Netflix) that would connect my tablet to my big screen. Best Buy had one for $35, but I found what I needed on Amazon for $8.
