We spotted these three traveling together around the boundary of our airport a couple days ago.

(149,727 posts)Is it my imagination, or are these three a bit more corpulent looking than normal?
Have they fattened themselves up for the lean months?
Sure looks like it!

(46,436 posts)Winter has been late starting here, so they got an extra couple of weeks before the snow (which finally came yesterday, about eight inches).

(46,436 posts)We have incidents every now and then, but usually they're fairly approachable (except moms with babies, of course).
A few years ago I was out walking in one of our parks and I came upon a big male and female right in the middle of the trail I was on. They weren't moving and I didn't want to turn around, so I just stepped off the trail a bit and waited them out. After about a half hour, they went on their way, but it was a little nerve-wracking. You really don't realize just how big they are until you're 10 feet away looking them in the eye.

(8,175 posts)I was alone and driving through British Columbia on vacation...had been driving all day and was exhausted. It was after midnight and I was looking for a camp ground. I had a cow and her calf come up out of the ditch and walk right in front of me on the highway, and my first thought was...WTH? They have giraffes up here? She was so big, that's all I could think of. It wasn't until her baby followed her up onto the road I realized I was seeing my first moose. They are pretty cool critters. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful spot...I don't envy you the winter cold though. I do love looking at your photos.

(1,389 posts)I have seen them up in Ontario, the moose, not the photos, when I visit a friend near Port Sydney. These do look healthy.

Anyway, way cool.

(46,436 posts)Back in the old days, before 9/11 changed everything, we could drive out and park at Pt. Woronzof, (just past where I took these pictures), which overlooks Cook Inlet and the volcanos across the water, any time, night or day. People loved to go out there on summer solstice and watch the sun set at 11:30 p.m. or park out there when it was dark and make out, watch the planes take off and land, get high, whatever. But after 9/11, they manned a gate there and you can no longer go to the point after 11 p.m. for "security" reasons. The funny part, though, is that the Coastal Trail runs right by there, parallel to the road, and you can walk right down there, no problem. Just one more ridiculous example of TSA overkill.
This is the view from Pt. Woronzof

(1,269 posts)I went to Chincoteague Island in VA one time and you can see the wild ponies running the dunes, they're like these guys, healthy and vibrant. Their manes and tails blowing in the wind, totally free of burrs and tangles. A friend of mine is a blacksmith and he was there, too. He commented on how healthy their feet were, (what else?)
I finally managed to get my own farm and let my horses just run, into the barn if they want, but they are almost always just out in the fields, even in stormy weather, they'll stand out with their backs to the weather and their heads down. And they are so healthy and fit.
Thanks for the pics, AK. They sure outsize our whitetail here in Ohio.
