Star Wars comes back to the big screen this weekend. From an interview Lucas did with The Hollywood Reporter:
The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo (who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original) to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isnt. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

Seemed to be the one who shot first? In the orginal, there was only one blast and one dead body. Does he think Greedo shot himself?

You can tell that to Jabba. He may only take your ship.
HAN
Over my dead body.
GREEDO
That's the idea. I've been looking forward to killing you for a long time.
HAN
Yes, I'll bet you have.
Suddenly the slimy alien disappears in a blinding flash of light. Han pulls his smoking gun from beneath the table as the other patron look on in bemused amazement. Han gets up and starts out of the cantina, flipping the bartender some coins as he leaves.

Sorry about the mess.

(193 posts)Han Solo was a pirate. He was a bad guy who had a good side eventually, but he was a smuggler who if he wanted to survive had to do bad things.
It's too bad Lucas made such a killer, kick-ass first movie. By the third, Revenge, he was the no-one-dare-edit-me egomaniac that made the bad movies we know and love today.

The original teaser trailer for the film carried the name Revenge of the Jedi, and a teaser poster created by Drew Struzan containing this title has since become a rare collector's item. However, a few weeks before the film's premiere, Lucas changed the title, saying "revenge" could not be used, as it is not a Jedi concept. The 2005 prequel trilogy film Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith later alluded to the dismissed title of Revenge of the Jedi.

I just thought it was interesting, that's all.

(38,326 posts)...that's why there was no fuss when Han shot him.
A jury of Han's peers decided right then and there that justice had been served.
That story makes perfect sense.
Lucas' revision doesn't.

(56,829 posts)Han used The Force to deflect Greedo's blaster and make it rebound back at Greedo.

(35,445 posts)George, re-edit the scene. Swap out Greedo with Jar Jar and have Han Solo shoot him in the face.

(22,308 posts)Hasn't any Star War geek ever read these books???
I can't believe this is a debatable point. I don't know the answer, and don't care in the least, but there should be a clear answer to this if only someone took the time to find out what it is.
P.S. I am a huge Sci-Fi geek but Star Wars is not among my favorite by any means.

(27,677 posts)The film was first, I believe. I don't really care; it's just amusing to watch Lucas retcon himself into knots.

(22,308 posts)thinking that the books were the cause and the movies were the effect.
It shouldn't make any difference. If there is a book based on the film (or a book the film is based on) then there should still be a clear answer to this question.

(3,650 posts)I mean Greedo is holding Han at gunpoint; Han has every right to kill him. Pure self defense. He doesn't need to challenge him to a fucking duel.

(27,677 posts)Lucas defends the change by saying he wanted to make clear to children that Han had no choice but to shoot Greedo. Lucas' version pretty much turns the character into an idiot.
