Ok I'm a tech junkie I'll admit it. Good quality consumer electronics, everything from cameras to tablets, phones, TVs, AV equipment. It's porn to me I place a heavy emphasis on good quality though as there is a lot of crap out there.
The other day I was in the mall walking around looking for Christmas presents when I happened to walk by the Samsung Experience store. In the window they had this monster of a TV. It was a 4K TV and had to be 80in or more in size. They had it looping some promotional shots (these things are always over saturated and over-sharpened but they do serve their purpose to wow on the right screen). I've seen some smaller 4K displays in electronics stores and even they impressed me. But this guy!!! Never seen a display feel so much like a window onto another world you could just walk out into. wow. I don't know what the price was and didn't bother to inquire as I knew it was their Lamborghini show piece only for the super rich, mostly used to advertise the company.
A quick Google shows it was probably this sucker:

$40,000
But then that's the price that 50in plasmas and the like first debuted at. Now those can be had for like $500-600. In time prices will drop on 4K like all other in demand CS stuff. Can't wait

OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)it comes with 10 or so movies in 4k already on its hard drive. Blu-ray tech is capable of holding 4k movies so, just as with HD, as the displays and the players come down in price, more media will be released.
I'll wait though lol.

(12,132 posts)You can get 65" Ultra High Def TVs for 4~5000$ at Best Buy today.
Still a little rich for my blood but by the time I'm ready for one they should be more manageable.
Can't wait till I can see my Cowboys fail in spectacular 4k!

(41,694 posts)I'll stick with my 2560x1600 30-in monitor.
I'll settle for watching the Clownboys lose on low res.

(12,132 posts)i have dual 21 inchers but i'd trade them for a single big smooth monitor at that rez. You can sort of get 4k monitors but it's really just 2 2k monitors on a single panel or some such nonsense (for the time being)...and you need a big honkin' video card to push it. (maybe 2? I forget...when they started talking money I lost interest in the article.)

(6,154 posts)Got my DELL 30in about 4+ years back. I will never go back to anything less than this!
Sadly it DOES mean you need something beefy to push it. This monitor was part of a crazy system I build when I was working at a computer hardware retailer (I've never been known to be practical when it comes to spending money on my hobbies ) I spent at least 700-800 on the vid card cause I wanted to game on this thing too and back then not much could push 2560x1600 at 30fps. If I knew the video card would fry on me a year later I might have gone with a cheaper card.

(6,154 posts)I'm typing this right now on an older DELL WFP3007. 2560x1600 30in IPS. It was kind of pricey at the time, I think I paid about 1600 for it, but damn was it worth it

(41,694 posts)found it online at ebay after checking several forums and this was recommended. $620 including shipping. Perfect pixel guarantee. Ordered it on a Thur. and got it Mon afternoon. It was so bright I damn near had to wear shades. Turned the brightness down to 35% and it's just right after I set it up and calibrated the settings to my NNidia GTX 650 card.

(8,747 posts)Therefore you will have to rely on your 4K TV having an upscaler.

I can't even imagine spending that on a TV, but boy, it was really pretty to look at.

(6,154 posts)In fact that would look worse than on a regular HD TV. Same as standard def on an HD.

(13,409 posts)110" is when you can start noticing the difference without sitting uncomfortably close to the display. I think 4K televisions are rather silly for now because they don't make them in sizes where you can really appreciate the extra resolution. Now 4K monitors on the other hand, I intend to get one rather soon. I use a 1080P projection system at home and recently upgraded to 1080P. On a 120" screen, the jump from 720P to 1080P is HUGE. The jump from 1080P to 4K would be much, much less so due to being able to resolve only so much resolution from typical viewing distances. Also, there is pretty much zero 4K content available right now and that doesn't look to change for a while until they offer 4K streaming movies (which seems rather silly as they'll need to compress the hell out of them to get them a decent size). I do intend to get a 4K projector eventually, but probably when they're a 1/10th or less the current $25,000 price.

(6,154 posts)This was in a mall, everyone was "window shopping" and when you walk by this TV you are probably at a viewing distance of some 2 to 3 feet. At this distance it really does blow you away! But you are right at the regular viewing distance of some 8ft or so the difference would be subtle. The other thing you aren't realizing is that part of what is blowing you away is seeing an 85" LCD to begin with. That much screen real estate is rather impressive to look at to begin with.
Good luck on the 4K projector that will be nice
Yeah it will be interesting to see where content goes. Physical storage mediums of one type or another are the only way right now to distribute true unadulterated 4K content, in any reasonable amount of time. Some quick calculations show that a 2Hr long 4K movie is a number of terrbytes in size. It will take a rather long time before internet connections are up to snuff for that kind of streaming, unless like you say they compress the shit out of stuff. The flip side to this is the fact that up till this point physical mediums have been dying out in favour of streaming and or downloading content.

(6,154 posts)I say technically cause the art assets and # of polygons in the models and landscapes would remain fixed which would make things look pretty bad. But technically if you have a vid card powerful enough all you have to do is run it at the appropriate resolution.

My wife and I bought this after selling our daughter Amanda into white slavery. We actually got a refurbished. It's missing the remote, but oh well-- for $10K off, I can afford a universal, right? The picture is amazing. I've never seen the world with such clarity.

I purchased this for my Atari 2600 and wow did it make a difference! Also, I am very thankful that it has low energy costs as I am on a very tight budget.

I was going to fund my daughters wedding in Hawaii, but I figured this Samsung TV would last much longer.

Has anyone bought this yet? My wife told me that she would leave me if I purchased it and I was wondering if this TV would be worth it.

That first one is actually much longer and detailed lol.

(41,987 posts)My nephew (he's in his 20s but...oops!) replied "Is that a half naked man?" I had no idea what he was talking about until I went back to the page and scrolled to the line of "Other things customers who looked at this also looked at" items. Go there. When you see what you're looking for, go read the reviews of THAT!
I'm going to be sore from laughing tomorrow.

(50,560 posts)The thing weighs damn near 200 pounds and the box it comes in weighs well over 100 all on its own. I believe in proper packing...but damn, son, didn't they go overboard?

(6,154 posts)When you are dealing with a $40,000 fragile TV probably can't be too careful. I'm guessing Samsung doesn't want to have to deal with customers nagging them about dead pixels on this monster

(8,747 posts)A service to come and unpack the TV, hang it on a wall mount, and program it for you. Lots of companies out there offering this service.
Dish offers it through Amazon. Well worth it for the money IMO. http://www.dish.com/support/installation-services/
