Any one know if there is a Taco Bell on Riverwalk?
Seriously, though, any GOOD reccomendations for restaurants in San Antonio? Going with my family this week on a pre-Christmas trip to visit my brother. We're coming back Saturday, so won't have time to try EVERYTHING. What are the restaurants that everyone HAS to try when in San Antonio?

(5,946 posts)We were there at Cinco de Mayo and for some reason took a ride to the Mexican part of town and ate in a really great but not fancy restaurant there.

(12,132 posts)so I doubt anything I knew then still even exists BUT if you only have time for a couple things I would find the most highly talked about by locals non-chain place and go there. TEx-Mex and BBQ Beef brisket are two of my most favorite things in the world and Texas does them both the best. The locals will know.

Best Guac and salsa selection I've had at a Tex-Mex joint, refried beans made right there from a family recipe (not out of a can), they make their own tortillas and chips fresh (grandmas and aunties are making them in the corner as you sit down. Prices are very reasonable. Huge servings and a full bar; Laz says the Margaritas are terrific. We've eaten there every time we visited his dad.
And if you're not into Tex-Mex, there's a halfway decent Whataburger down the street from there. I've heard that the "Magic Time Machine" that's two/three blocks down the Loop 410 access road (use the side of the access road the Whataburger is on) from there is a fun place to eat (indivudually themed booth areas and the waiters dress up in costume), even if the food is rather generic.

A local person took me to a Tex-Mex restaurant that was about 5 miles north of downtown. That was outstanding, but I can't remember the name of it, unfortunately.

(36,827 posts)Granted I haven't tried them all, but none of them seemed worthy of remembering. Gringo Mexican food was my impression for the ones I've tried. The best Mexican food is usually found in places that look like hammered shit from the outside, but inside are family owned and operated.

What you call "gringo Tex-Mex" is what I can eat and enjoy. I grew up on Monterey House, which started in Pasadena, Texas. It was mild.
I cannot eat spicy food, bell peppers, nor tomatoes due to allergies. I started getting a clue in high school. I ate pizza and it made an "encore appearance" about an hour later. Not fun.
I wish I could find a recipe for spinach enchiladas. They have those at Spanish Village in Houston.
