Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumsin less than an hour I'll be saying goodbye to my trusty old volvo
She lasted me just as long as I needed her to but repairing her at this point makes no sense, so we're selling her off as a parts car. Not getting as much out of her as I'd like to, but I can't imagine people breaking down my door for her.
Thank you for all the years you served me and served me well, girl, I am going to miss you.
Excuse me while I have a bit of a cry, it's hard to say goodbye after 16 years.

(8,492 posts)I become very attached to my cars. They've all been 'men' and named.
Right now, I'm preparing myself to say good-bye to Elvis. Just hoping he can limp through winter.
It'll be okay, fizzgig. She's donating her organs to others that might really need to tape up their cars to make it work to feed the kids.

(24,146 posts)She's outlasted many people in my life and part of me thought she'd always be with me.
Good luck to you and Elvis, good thoughts that he can make it through for you.

(55,013 posts)I have the fortune (or maybe not) of having room and no zoning so I can keep dead vehicles around. Still have the car my parents took their last trips in. They did a big circle of northern Mexico a year or so before my Mom died. I got the car as a hand me down after my sister had it for commuting to work in Phx. Of course it was on its last legs and barely lasted 6 moths before the engine blew, but it is still sitting here. I couldn't dump it even when scrap was high and we cleaned up the pile of less sentimental vehicles. sigh.
there is also my grandfather's old corvair station wagon (that one might actually be worth somethign), an old international pick-up that was my father-in-law's work truck, along with a few "just need a little money and work to get running again" junkers that would really be better off gone...
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)Broke my heart to think about sending her for scrap. If we didn't live in an apartment, I would have parted her out for a bit more money, but at least I know she'll live on in other cars.

(7,208 posts)I still have the first car I ever bought in 1986 (it's a '68). And the four others I bought after that.
My daily driver is a 2000 Saturn LS. It isn't pretty, but it has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. It fits me like a comfortable old shoe. I have dubbed it "The Silver Hornet".
Save the hood ornament or the shift knob as a memento.

(24,146 posts)She and I knew each other well. I love my current volvo, but I'll never have the same relationship with him as I did with her.

Didn't want the only one to be of her on the tow truck. She was ugly as sin but rolled on for a long time.

(21,925 posts)I love old cars and have four of them 1973 and older. I currently have a 1973 Saab that's still running strong and is the best car I've ever owned.
I've always wanted an old Volvo "Amazon", preferably the two door coupe.

(7,208 posts)That thing will bake the rear tires for a good 100 feet.

(24,146 posts)She did have a good run, though.

(14,061 posts)Old age just catches up with us all, and there comes a point where you really can't be throwing money at it week after week.

(14,061 posts)It was donated to charity, and as the wrecker went off down the street, it was hard to see it go away. It was my first car, and I had it nearly 20 years.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)The wrecker had me pinned in my space, so I had to watch them drive off before I could head to work. Part of me is glad I got to watch her go, the other part of me was heartbroken seeing her on that wrecker.

(53,475 posts)... your situation. How we become emotionally attached to inanimate objects is a mystery to me, but I've suffered from the same problem.
Hope you find a new love, one that will be as faithful as your last.

(24,146 posts)Had him for three years now and now that the cold start issue is resolved, I hope he will serve us just as long. We need a road trip to solidify that bond, though.

(24,146 posts)I half expected to drive her until she burst into flames.
From another one who cries over cars. I know.
It feels a bit silly, but she was more than just a car. She was my friend.
