Rescued! County fire crews save kitten caught in Royal Palm Beach pipe
A tiny kitten meowing for help was rescued Saturday after being trapped in a 4-inch-wide sewer pipe behind a shopping center on Okeechobee Boulevard, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said.
The grayish-black kitten was soaking wet when crews, with the help of a camera provided by Speedy Rooter Plumbing, finally freed it. The kitten was dried, warmed and taken to a veterinarian, said Capt. Albert Borroto, Fire Rescue spokesman.
Crews were called to the shopping center in the 11300 block of Okeechobee Boulevard west of Royal Palm Beach High School at about 10 a.m. Saturday to help county Animal Care & Control officers free the trapped kitten.
Borroto said crews could hear the exhausted kitten meowing but were unable to coax it out of the pipe.
It took crews about four hours to free the cat, he said. A complicated network of sewer lines behind the shopping center prevented crews from reaching the animal more quickly.
Borroto said the kitten is now in the custody of Animal Care & Control.
