Here's a phrase everyone should try to use today: meat raffle.

I don't know what it means, but I like the way it sounds. Let's all use this phrase. It could usher in a new age of human enlightenment.

Any other phrases you think we should use more?

I'd suggest avoiding it, so as not to raise a meat raffle amongst the crowd.

I just experimented dry aging meat recently, and it was awesome.

Being given a huge chunk of meat just sounds pretty epic right about now.

Maybe it's an Aussie thing, but they're very popular here.

Essentially on Friday and Saturday nights somebody will be selling tickets at the pub, normally quite cheaply like 10 for $5 or whatever. At a pre-determined time a ticket is drawn and the winner get's a tray of meat. The tray's are fairly substantial and would normally have enough meat for about a week for a small family and be a variety, say some snags (Aussie for sausages), steaks, a leg of lamb and some bacon.

Now as if that wasn't enough, normally a pub doing meat raffles will do a number of them, 5 to 10 or more depending on the size of the place.

And as if that wasn't enough, sometimes they raffle seafood so the tray will include lobster and prawns (the real name for shrimp!) etc.

typically a local hole in the wall bar will hold a meat raffle to raise money for some local charity, i think the one i knew benefited the volunteer fire dept. every wed night, all the locals will pack the bar, a ticket seller will go around and sell tickets, raffling off one package of meat at a time. there may be 20 or more packs to raffle and tickets are 50 cents. everybody gets tanked, wins a pack of meat and goes home and cooks it up for dinner.
