An emergency visit to the dentist this morning resulted in him sending me to an endodontist to treat an abscessed tooth. The endodontist found that TWO teeth, next to each other, are abscessed. (#13 & #14) Both teeth have had root canals previously.
So next week an apicoectomy on both teeth. In the meantime I'm taking antibiotic for the infections and just picked up some pain pills. My face is all swollen on the left side from the infections. Oh, and OWWWW!
I need a hug. Just till the pain pills kick in. (Then I will discontinue my pity party)
PS - Maybe Skittles can kick my ass and take my mind off my jaw.

(29,414 posts)Because I'm currently going through almost the same thing. Tooth #15 had a filling fall out many, many moons ago, and then kind of got filled in or covered over with plaque. Within a couple of weeks of being cleaned recently, it began to hurt and become exceptionally sensitive to pressure. After two days of that kind of excruciating pain, I got an appointment with my dentist, got antibiotics (as well as advice on some supplements to get and take - zinc, calcium, magnesium, and another I can't remember) and the pain went away in two more days.
I'm still on the antibiotics, and won't see the endontist until next week. I did have swelling after the pain went away, and was a bit concerned, but it went back down again after a few more days.
The pain pills do help, especially for sleeping and eating. Just know that the antibiotics will lessen the pain, as part of the problem is that the nerve is inflamed. I also took turmeric capsules, and that has helped some, for inflammation.

(17,865 posts)Mine started Friday night but I had to be out of town the weekend so I held off until Monday to call the dentist. Unfortunately my dentist was closed for the MLK Holiday so I didn't get in until this morning. After that much time had elapsed the pain became excruciating today.
I took the pills about an hour ago. I'm feeling no pain now.
On the downside - Iowa caucus was tonight and I didn't make it. Oops! Couldn't be helped!

when you're either on pain meds like that, or not on the pain meds, so don't worry about missing your caucus
So, just relax and sleep well once again tonight!

(17,865 posts)As I recall you are in eastern Iowa. I'm in Council Bluffs - I missed the caucus tonight because of this infection kicking my butt.
Thanks for the hug neighbor!

(62,465 posts)I was the only attendee. Actually we had 3 precincts together and only had me and the other precinct caucus leader.

(21,860 posts)I didn't know pain until I had this abscess. Yikes!
Signs of the abscess started around 12/28; on New Year's Eve, I was in so much pain and my face was swollen that I got an emergency dental appointment. The dentist prescribed antibiotics (a Z pack) and referred me to the endodontist. The antibiotics brought the swelling down and I felt fine in a few days.
I then had the apicoectomy on Jan. 14th. I had a local anesthesia, septocaine, and didn't feel pain during the procedure but my face was numb and swollen. I was also started on another round of antibiotics, Clindamycin, and was given painkillers -- Tylenol with codeine.
The pain the next day was intense. My face was swollen. My head was foggy and I couldn't focus. I spent a good part of this past weekend in bed because the whole thing had made me exhausted. I also had GI issues from the antibiotics.
Finally, I started feeling like myself yesterday, 6 days after the procedure. The stitches were taken out late yesterday; I think there were four stitches. I felt pain when one was taken out but not the others.
Long story short --- about six days of pain and fatigue. GI issues from the antibiotics.
Then back to normal.
So that was my story with one abscess. I feel so bad for you with two.
I hope you can take time off from work while you recover because you will probably be fairly useless for a couple of days.

(17,865 posts)I'm scheduled for a double root canal and apicoectomy next Tuesday - I only took that one day off. I hope that's enough. But I only have to work a couple hours.
I have to work tomorrow too - 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon. But I have the antibiotics working for me another overnight and I'll take a couple pain pills if I have to. He's given me Hydrocodone.

(53,339 posts)I had lots of dental work after losing half my teeth and jaw in Vietnam. EVERY procedure was an ordeal, and I sympathize with anyone going through it.
You'll do fine--probably better than I did. And if not, we always have skittles...
