My youngest son has made applications to graduate schools for next year.
He's currently in Berlin (Germany) on a Fulbright scholarship. He's
coming home this Saturday--for 3 weeks--and part of the reason for the timing
is to be available to go for personal interviews, if invited, to grad schools. He goes
back March 1st to finish the 10 months on his Fulbright which will be up mid-July
Well, the reason I'm so excited is that Yale just called here looking for him to
schedule a visit in mid-February! AAAGGHGGGHH!!!! It's one of the two top schools
in the field--Dramaturgy--where he's applied. And from my perspective, it's THE place
for him to go.
I just have to share the good news!

(31,406 posts)He is the third generation in our family to have a love for the theatre--and might be the first
to actually figure out a way to make a living in it. His great aunt and great uncle were both
graduates of the Pasadena Playhouse in the 1940's, and although I was accepted to a top drama school
for undergraduate study (back in 1969) my parents refused to give me the money to attend.
So I gave up on the idea of trying to make a career in theater and only in the last 20 years
did I come around to acting as an avocation.
It is so thrilling to think he's SO close...

(2,480 posts)He is in D,C. so is taking the train up there tomorrow.
I don't know where he gets this love for the theater. His grandma and mother are both artists, so maybe that is part of it.
He is going to help direct a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this spring/summer.

(31,406 posts)My son will be going the week of Feb. 17th. Haven't heard from him yet the exact day. It's driving me nuts
not to hear the play by play details! But he'll be flying in from Berlin this Saturday...so I guess I'll hear details then.
Good luck to your grand-nephew!

(3,998 posts)Those Fulbrights are pretty hard to get, aren't they?

(31,406 posts)there were 100 applications for Fulbrights from his school--UNC Chapel Hill--
last year and 13 were granted. His Fulbright is related to theatre. He also
graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a double major (German and Comparative Literature),
He's a really talented guy. He also has a vision impairment--is legally blind--
but you'd never know it when you first meet him. He sees with his peripheral vision
and covers really well. But he can't recognize his own mom from 20 feet away.
He also doesn't drive...never will...unless the stem cell work that is being done
to restore vision to people with Stargardt's disease becomes routine.

(31,406 posts)and it turns out that he was contacted by Columbia today to interview, too!
Looks like he might be able to work out a long weekend to NY with an interview
at Columbia on Friday and interview at Yale on the following Monday.
He's really thrilled!
