Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsBeen watching old Johnny Carson episodes lately
Since Carson was "late night king" from 1962-1992, it's like a replay of mainstream America and celebrities during my earlier life. On Youtube, some of the videos even have the old commercials (ugh).
It's really fascinating to see the celebrities who are much younger then and some, like Jimmy Stewart and Bette Davis, who are no longer here. Anyone else who was a Carson fan ?

(3,998 posts)I was born in '64 so I grew up on Carson. My parents let me watch, heehee. Also watched Monty Python and Saturday Night Live as a kid. Made me who I am today

(37,457 posts)When I was older, I was almost always out partying with my friends. He had some really good guests on. He had one 90ish year old lady who was friends with Buster Keaton and did silent movies - fascinating !

(10,098 posts)I loved Carson, he graduated from my Alma Mater and his estate still makes substantial gifts to the university. He was funny and had a naughty side.

(7,570 posts)A friend of mine saw him do card manipulations on a break during the Tonight Show. He said it was amazing. Ricky-Jay-level type stuff.
There has never been, or ever will be, another like Carson.

(15,941 posts)And NBC should have used reruns of Carson instead of live Leno. All talk show hosts with the exception of Letterman can't hold a candle to Carson.

(448 posts)and as I grew older, I never missed him. IMHO, no one can hold a candle to him! I guess Letterman comes the closest (Letterman, BTW, is the one who Johnny really wanted to take over The Tonight Show and from my understanding, Johnny really didn't care for Leno). I like both Jimmy's (Fallon and & Kimmel). It'll be interesting to see how Fallon does....

(27,247 posts)I couldn't watch the Tonight Show after he left-- it just wasn't the same. And even in the final years, when there were so many guest hosts, I had a hard time watching it if he wasn't hosting it.
And if he didn't have Carnac the Magnificent on at some time during the show, I would be very disappointed!

(8,310 posts)Carson was the best. This clip is considered one of the funniest moments ever on TV
The entire routine lasted like 5 minutes so you don't hear all the jokes here. But it still makes me laugh to tears.

(18,494 posts)Johnny, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, Dick Cavett, probably some I've forgotten.
I really loved when they'd have comedians performing their schtick. The younger ones like Dave Letterman, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, etc, but also older guys who'd been in early TV, radio and even Vaudeville. There was one week when Mike had John and Yoko as co-hosts for the whole week.
