DU Album of the Day: "CSN" Crosby, Stills & Nash

A 1977 release, CSN marked a reunion of sorts for three of the four members of supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. After Neil Young's departure, the remaining members recorded "Deja Vu" in 1970, then pursued individual projects for the next several years. CSN showed that the trio still had their musical skills, augmented now by a more mature lyrical talent. The singles, "Just a Song Before I Go" and the lesser-known "Fair Game" drew sketches of loneliness in the crowd and the fire lurking inside a quiet vessel.

Not to be overlooked are several other tracks, including "Shadow Captain" a study in charcoal and "Anything at All." "Cathedral," inspired by a Graham Nash acid trip at Winchester Cathedral goes from quiet reflection to manic out-of-control and back. "Dark Star" and "See the Changes" also showcase the diverse talents of a diverse trio.

There have been some complaints that Crosby, Stills & Nash were still stuck in the acoustic, folky 60s, and the album is an out of place relic subsumed by synthesizers and the burgeoning punk scene. But for all the avant-garde encroachment of the time, this music remains to be heard while the deathless work of other enfants terribles have been forgotten.

CSN is one of my all time favorite groups. IMO, nobody does better harmony and blending of voices. Arkansas Granny Feb 2012 #1

I have owned their first album on vinyl, 8-track, cassette and cd.

I've seen them twice in concert and could sit and listen to them for hours.
