Robert Palmer Fans--The story behind the song "I didn't mean to turn you on"

I heard that the song was written after Robert read a fan's letter to him. The fan was a young teenager and it unnerved Mr Palmer that she would write a letter like that.

Is that true?

When I took you out
I knew what you were all about
But when I did
I didn't mean to turn you on
Now I bring you home
You told me goodnight's not enough for you
I'm sorry baby
I didn't mean to turn you on.

It doesn't sound to me like lyrics he'd have written to this supposed young teenage girl fan, but that's just my opinion. I don't know.

it was a hit for an R&B artist named Cherelle in 1984, produced by Jimmie Jam and Terri Lewis of Janet Jackson fame. Robert Palmer covered it a year later.
