(20,176 posts)the derogatory slang word for female genitalia "pud" is short for pudendum, Latin for "thing of shame" and can be traced to Greek antecedents found in texts going back 1500+ years BCE, showing that misogyny is at-least 3500 years old and pre-dates the shift in Greco-Roman religion from Gaean (feminine, Earth-mother centric) to Jovian (masculine, patriarchal Olympian sky-cult).
Now you've learned something today. Men have been dicks for millennia and yet, women still put up with us. I was shocked too.
This is the Snake Handler of Minoan Crete, a conceptualization of the Earth-mother and precursor to Gaea.

(20,176 posts)I knew that when I posted the comment above. (Edit: One of my aunts is from Ohio and says it constantly as a euphemism for lollygagging. "Quit pullin' your pud!" Historically though, it's a term for a vagina...rather common as such in Victorian English actually.
The gender-change is interesting but not uncommon. Look at the origins of the word "bimbo" (It's a masculine noun for "little boy" or non-gender-specific "small child" in Italian) for another.
