Talk about yet another versatile food that is extremely good for you... and there are so many different varieties with different flavors and different textures.
There's so much you can do with them--from casseroles, to soups, to salads, to falafel and bean cakes and burgers.
And not only do you get a lot of fiber and protein, they're cheap!
What's your favorite kind?

(102,288 posts)I'm surprised so few (in my experience) know about adzuki beans. Really good bean with an almost nutty flavor.

(12,723 posts)Fresh pot makes hummus and then falafel and then a couple of curry dishes. Good protein and cheap.

(32,086 posts)I'll eat them plain, right out of the can, when I buy canned chickpeas. I love them with pasta and veggies, and on salads. They're also delicious seasoned and then roasted like peanuts.
I love roasted chickpeas. I eat them straight out of the can too, either alone or mixed with other beans. Toss a little sea salt and hot sauce on top and I'm good.

(6,996 posts)I include chick peas in my three-been salad for color variety and get the bonus of great added flavor and nutrition. Another fave is hummus. I've been using it on sandwiches instead of mayo.

(38,317 posts)Black beans or lentils are my most common choice.
I even like Lima Beans.
When I was a kid my grandparents would serve a stew of Lima beans, cabbage, and corned beef or tongue. Occasionally my mom makes it too.
I made it once for my wife and she thought it was yucky. I learned she does not like Lima Beans. She's never been fond of meat and is now entirely vegetarian. I'm just mostly vegetarian. Oh well.

Black beans take the silver. They're great in both Mexican and Chinese dishes.

(5,167 posts)When I was young, family had lime beans frequently; you don't see them on menus much anymore.
I especially liked lima beans and corn - they called it succotash. Mmmm good.

(4,056 posts)I think I was born in the wrong part of the world: I hated every western dish put in front of me when I was a kid. My parents were the greatest generation, so we always had some high-end meat for Sunday dinner to prove that we were truly out f depression and war sacrifices. I rejected it all for baked beans--considered po' peoples's food in the 60s. The 'rents were appalled.
I finally stopped being a "picky eater" when I discovered ethnic foods became a vegetarian--diets that are mostly beans and grain. Add all the yummy fresh fruits and veggies, I'm never bored with what I eat anymore.
Oh, and you forgot to mention edamame! Delicious little buds of pure protein: what more could you want? A salad w/that, kidneys, garbanzos and some spinach is what's for dinner in my house!
