food rave of the day (3/14): brussels sprouts

I was going to do a pie poll, but someone already beat me to it.

Anyway, another cruciferous veg full of flavor and versatility.

But I know a lot of people don't like them (even people who love lots of other vegetables).

What say you?

MissMillie, I'm sorry I posted a pie poll when I know you do a food rave every week day.

Halved or quartered, and sprinkled with olive oil and chopped garlic, or with chopped pancetta bacon (or regular bacon). Wish I was having that for dinner...

specifically, the "Coastside" of San Mateo County, that is, the area along Highway 1 stretching south of SF along the coast and west of the Coast Range. The cool, foggy, wet (usually) weather is perfect. The agricultural capital of the region, Half Moon Bay, is also home to an annual giant-pumpkin-growing contest. The winners can top 1,000 pounds!

When I was a kid my mom would try to get me to eat brussels sprouts, and just I couldn't stand them and wouldn't eat them. When I grew up I figured that was just a kid thing so I tried them again. And I still can't stand them. Tried them boiled, baked, roasted; they're awful no matter how you cook them. They are intolerably bitter and smell like rotting garbage.

And recently I found out that there is a genetic basis for hating them. http://www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2011/nov/01/brussel-sprout-gene

any other way you can think of. Heck, I'll even take frozen ones boiled to mush and covered with salt and pepper and butter.

Remember DU discussions about cilantro, and black licorice?

The only thing I don't really like is anchovies, partly because I can't stand most super-salty foods.

Here are but a couple of the times cilantro and black licorice were brought up-

After all, Brussels is only a 2 hour drive from us. How could we not?
