It's a very-closely-held proprietary corporate secret, along with the algorithms Google uses to manage search results. those two things are the holy grail for anybody working in the field of SEO. It's the sort of information that makes billionaires because it's the sort of information that would allow an SEO professional to doctor results for-hire to client whim. It would destroy faith and credibility in Google and Amazon by the general public as-well.

Generally, through trial-and-error testing we have some vague idea that it works on "Lots of people who liked Y (Atlas Shrugged) also had clicked-on or searched for X (Idiocracy)"; note that is the opposite of the expected "Lots of people who liked X (Idiocracy) also had clicked-on or searched for Y (Atlas Shrugged)" that most people think is how Amazon's search works. That small inversion thwarts most non-professionals trying to game the system.
