(17,200 posts)... I'd be amazed to find anyone who hasn't ever been in a fight at some point in his life.

I haven't done this since I was 11.

(14,881 posts)have thrown punches in anger by myself, into a pillow. I took karate for a short time and threw punches then, although mostly at bricks and not in anger.
I was the youngest and smallest of 3 girls, all of whom were beaten by our mother. I always freeze in terror when somebody lights into me.

(17,200 posts)I'd guess it is less common for the distaff to get into fistfights, although I'd be interested to know how much that's changed over the generations. A couple of my more memorable fistfights as a kid were with girls -- and naturally, I got punished for hitting a girl, even though they were bigger than I (I was a scrawny little kid).

(12,022 posts)because I suspect there'd be a big difference if you broke it down along gender lines.

(21,925 posts)There were a lot of bullies picking on kids, especially on the way home from school and I just never could back down. I don't recall a fight though after the age of 12.

(25,586 posts)I lost count of the number of violent incidents that resulted from looking like that.
I say "gangster-types" because I think very few of them were actually gang members. I think it was just a way to look tough and assert a certain cultural identity.

(20,564 posts)i'm also guessing the majority of these fistfights reported in the poll occurred among minors

(27,120 posts)One would hope that learning violence is wrong is something most adults have mastered.

(4,734 posts)is counterproductive. First of all, throwing a punch is only justified if you or someone else is at risk for grave bodily harm. Secondly, when you allow emotions to cloud your judgment, you are liable to make a mistake and get yourself hurt or go overboard with your reaction, turning justifiable self defense into an assault.

(20,043 posts)let me clarify--I NEVER threw the first punch.
I was taught never to throw the first punch/start a fight but never let anyone get away with putting their hands on you.
I was kicked out of a school for fighting. I had a kinda rough childhood/teen years.

(6,199 posts)I was pretty damn angry about being hit in the face. Since that also plays as self defense, I'm not sure how to vote.

(20,581 posts)I was crossing a street in Seattle and some frat boys were crossing the other direction. As they passed me one guy put his hand up my skirt so I swung around with my fist to hit his face but he was tall and just had to lean back so I didn't land anything.
It was just an automatic response - really wished I had hit him though.
