Flying fowl

A duck or a goose flew in front of my car this weekend, I tried to stop but he managed to get just enough lift so that as I braked and the front of the car tilted down, he very gently (well that's easy for me to say, it probably hurt like hell for him) slid up the hood, up the windshield and onto the roof and then flew off to the side. He was with a group of other stupid fowl but he was the only one who made contact with the car. He seemed to not be injured but it scared the living hell out of me.

Then today I witnessed two turkeys fly across the freeway! They were just above the car level and they both made it, but I've never seen that before.

What's up with the flying fowl this weekend anyway?

Time for pairing up, making sweet swet love and getting a little gravid. I expect they're paying a lot more attention to one another than they are to you. Also, the barametric pressure might be low.

I was on 81 N. on the way back to the Harrisburg area and pretty much everyone was doing 75, including the truck in front of me. A hawk came gliding in at low altitude and I was certain the trailer was going to hit it and send the thing up, over, and right through my windshield. It cleared the top of the trailer by what looked like no more than a foot and kept going. I suspect it does this for fun - "WHAT a RUSH, man!!!"

When my wife taught in S.C., there were these sparrow-sized dark-red birds that just WAITED for your car and would fly right in front of it almost at street level. Neither of us ever hit one, but you could always see them at the last minute on the right, they would disappear under the hood line, and show up on the other side. Weird little habit they have there.
