From my birthplace on Pittsburghs Northside. Brought us the Doors, The Velvet Underground and soup cans in space, among other things.

I didn't get into his solo stuff until long after he was killed, but nowadays I think it was his contribution that really set the Beatles apart.

We lost him just when his career was getting started. Who knows what his music would have become as he grew. I used to have an 8-track that he recorded with Ingrid before he was "discovered". It was very sweet and poignant.

Wow! Talk about a coincidence. I'm listening to Pandora and just now "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" started playing.

I've read about 90% of his books, some of which...like "Hawaii", "Centennial", and "Chesapeake" are long and satisfying to the point that I have had to buy new copies of them every few years because I wear them out from reading them over and over.

It makes me sad to think that there won't be any more from him.

Sarum: The Novel of England by Edward Rutherford? It's in the style of Michener's Hawaii.

While I respect his choice, I think he would have stuck around a little longer if he had any idea what was coming.

I guess I just thought John Ritter would always be around, kinda like Betty White.
