grade 10. I completely lost my way in the latter half of highschool. I should have stuck with the sciences. But I ended up with a degree in economics which fits in well with my love of politics. Though i am losing some of my eco knowledge. Since i can't bring myself to read the economist regularly these days, I bought an economics booked geared towards politicians and those who need a quick and dirty exploration of the subject. It looks good.

(12,132 posts)The only class I ever got a perfect score in for the year. Never scored less than 100 on any test or assignment and often scored more than 100 counting extra credit questions.
Never got better than D in algebra but for some reason geometry clicked with me.
But as far as fun I think I liked English Lit a little better - I liked reading most of the books we were assigned.

(118,677 posts)backwards for the most part. I do not remember any of the theorems anymore. Algebra wasn't such a problem for me. Matrix & Linear algebra did me in in University.

(23,272 posts)all other math classes, especially algebra.
But I was also really good at all of the humanities classes: history, english, poli sci, comparative religions, even art.
So I've got this theory based upon my daughters and myself, my husband and others I've anecdotally shared this with.... There's a brain connection there I'm sure....

(12,132 posts)I have no scientific evidence but anecdotal is good enough for me. It has to be right because I can think of no other explanation for how easy geometry was and how hard algebra was. Especially after all my teachers told me what a miserable failure I would be in geometry considering how poorly I was doing in algebra.
I loved doing those proofs and theorems too and I don't remember any of them now either.

(55,013 posts)I had a shitty instructor for geometry so I can't be sure that wasn't the problem.
I couldn't master calculus - that was my math wall.

(41,984 posts)Whatever wiring you guys are talkinga bout I ain't got. But I suck down just about anything else and I love to write. History, social sciences, creative writing, English, loved 'em. Damn near flunked a year because I don't DO math. I actually went through graduate school without math. Well, there was that remedial algebra but it was pitiful, and I took a great course in The History of Numbers.
Liberal Arts School with majors in Creative Writing and Psychology, doncha know.

(59,305 posts)I took to Biology/Science courses like a fish to water, never getting anything less than an A, it came so naturally to me. Art class was always a hoot, especially with my fellow friends, we spent most of the time arguing over comics. Photo class was a lot of fun, except for my teacher who was an overbearing/angry man.
I wanted to become a Marine Biologist, but couldn't afford to go to a university that had a decent program(wanted to go to Oregon/Washington).

(5,364 posts)That sure boded well for the SAT's huh?
My favorites were Science ( the teachers were great ) and the shop classes: Wood, metal, automotive, as well as history, again, great teachers.
Always hated math and still do but it didn't take me long to appreciate english class being so hard in my high school. We had to read a lot of books and plays and I was surprised at how much more well read I was than many of my peers as I went through life.

(48,217 posts)I'm another one who was a dunce in two years of algebra but loved geometry. I don't know why that was. Maybe it just felt more like art to me.
I finally "got" algebra as an adult when I took night courses. By that time, I realized that you can't study math as if it were a humanity. It's a whole different approach. But nobody ever told me that in high school, just as nobody ever told me that it is possible to change one's level of physical fitness. I thought people were either born physically fit, in which case the PE teachers liked them, or physically unfit, in which case the PE teachers humiliated them.

(23,980 posts)Our class went to the state We the People finals. For those who don't know, We the People is a competition that involves critical thinking as relates to the Constitution and US citizenship.
One of our teachers was President of the local World Affairs Council.
Our other teacher knew just about everything there is to know about Roswell.

(47,675 posts)It was somewhat self-paced. I wasn't having any trouble with the course so I'd ask to go down to the band room. The teacher was a bit lost-in-space-ish about reality, so I'd head out the front door and up the hill to the JITB with a few friends who pulled the same trick. We'd spend the class period drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and making artwork with coffee stirrers and lighters. Then back to school for 3rd period. We only got caught ONCE! In school detention for about an hour after school one day - no big deal.

I hate Math. I am a mathematical moron.
Show me numbers, and my brain shuts off. Zip. That's it. It's like I'm trying to make sense of hieroglyphics. I just do not care.
That's how it was, and how it still is.

(32,086 posts)Especially the first semester, which covered Archaeology. I almost went into it, but didn't think I could earn a living at it. So, I went with my other love, Biology. Sadly, I'm finding that it's not really much better here, either.

(12,296 posts)....it came very naturally to me and by junior year, there were only about 6 of us left in class so it was more relaxed and more fun because those of us who were there, were there because we wanted to be - not because we 'needed a foreign language credit'.
After that, probably senior year psych because teacher was usually tipsy.

While I was in school in Spain, we took an informal elective non-credit course in Catalan, which
I still speak today. VERY cool when you meet up with people from northeastern Spain or the
Balearic Islands, and they hear you can speak their language--talk about instant connections!

(34,136 posts)My art teacher was convinced I had a lot of talent. Then I got to college and no wanted representational art in 1970. The Art Department didn't even have classes to teach the basics of design or techniques. We were just supposed to "feel" our art and do whatever we felt like, I guess.
I should have stuck with Spanish, I guess.

(55,013 posts)I had some really good instructors and some good classes. I have an affinity for biology and science but we also had a really good art dept. and even though I have no talent, I enjoyed jewelry-making and drawing.
Had some good English teachers, as well as sociology and government.
I wish, however that I had taken auto mechanics - that probably would have helped me the most in life.
